"Have you ever looked at something and it's crazy, and then you looked at it in another way and it's not crazy at all?"                                - Roy Neary

CFC Media Lab presents the annual exhibition of work by residents of the TELUS Interactive Art & Entertainment Program. These interactive media projects run the gamut, from interactive sound pieces to iPhone-wearable gaming systems. From those which explore notions of first contact, to others which invite us to reimagine play. Regardless of technology platform or theme, each of these projects makes us look at things a different way. Shaving cream, pillows, mud – they can all become vehicles for our persistent visions.

Congratulations to all of our CFC Media Lab alumni:

Also a part of the exhibition this year is I Should Be Dreaming of Butterflies, by CFC alumna, Sharon Switzer.

In her latest body of work, video artist Sharon Switzer continues on the trajectory of pairing unlikely, poetic, and darkly humorous texts with evocative visuals. Known for text-based videos, Switzer, in this new work adds abstracted digital drawings, often referencing certain real-world objects or ideas. Some works denote quick thoughts, others are ultra-short stories.

The title, I Should Be Dreaming of Butterflies, refers to what she should be doing - dreaming of butterflies - instead of what she is doing - thinking about life in a more realistic, banal and sometimes negative way. Switzer, all the while, is maintaining a sense of humour. By referencing dreams, she draws attention to an otherworldly space where the work exists.

This series of animated digital video drawings is also an exploration into the possibilities of ‘creation' within a digital compositing program. They are not traditional drawing, video, animation – but something unique born from within this medium.
