​WSFF Campaign Goes Viral with Short Film Remakes of 'Charlie Bit My Finger'

TORONTO, May 18, 2011 – While some equate ‘short film' with what they see on YouTube, short film is where most filmmakers first make their mark and hone their craft. Seeking to showcase the quality and range of short films featured during its annual short film festival, the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival (WSFF), presented by Telus, (May 31 to June 5) launched its 2011 campaign, created by Toronto agency doug & serge inc. featuring three original short films which have quickly gone viral.

Inspired by the most watched viral video in the world, ‘Charlie Bit My Finger', the WSFF and doug & serge commissioned three accomplished Canadian directors (Jeff Chan, Sammy Ray Welch and Shelley Lewis) to create the three films: ‘Charlie Bit My Finger – The Horror', ‘Charlie Bit My Finger – The Musical' and ‘Charlie Bit My Finger – The Dark Comedy'. The videos, which have already been viewed over half a million times, can be seen at charliebitmyfinger.ca.

“Every year we look at creating an entertaining value proposition that supports the impressive array of international short films that we program at the festival.,” said Barry Patterson, Director, Marketing & Communications at the CFC. “Working with doug & serge, we engaged filmmakers to create cinematic short works of art that represent the power of this medium. We want everyone that loves film and attends feature length movies and documentaries to experience and embrace this form of content.”

WSFF has noticed the surge in popularity for creating short films. This year's festival saw a record 4,200 submissions, from countries including the United States, Burundi and Iraq-Kurdistan. Appearing on-screen and behind the camera are many heavyweight Academy Award® winners and nominees, including Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Anthony Hopkins, Spike Jonze, Charlie Kaufman and Rachel Weisz.

“Each day millions of people watch countless videos online but most of those videos suffer in quality compared to a short film. This is what gave our creative team our key insight that “Anyone can upload. Few can direct.” to really celebrate the short film genre and promote North America's leading short film festival,” said Doug Robinson, Chief Creative Officer at doug & serge. “The response so far has been amazing since most of the campaign hasn't even hit the marketplace yet.
