After months of playing to packed theatres across Canada, additional showtimes have been announced for Big News from Grand Rock, the new comedy from director Daniel Perlmutter. Full screening details are included below.
Big News from Grand Rock is the first feature from alumnus writer/director Daniel Perlmutter. It was produced by alumni Michael McNamara and Judy Holm and was supported through the 2011 Telefilm Canada Feature Comedy Exchange (formerly the Telefilm Canada Features Comedy Lab).
Big News from Grand Rock follows Leonard Crane (Ennis Esmer), the editor of the Grand Rock Weekly Ledger, the struggling paper facing bankruptcy in a small no-news town. Searching relentlessly for the killer story to bring back readers, he finds it, not in the real world, but in old movies in a video rental store. The plan pays off as one fabricated story after another brings excitement and readers back to the paper. But inevitably the hoax unravels as big city reporter Lucy (Meredith MacNeill) heads into town to follow-up on one of his more scandalous stories. She exposes Leonard, but they are both shocked when they stumble upon evidence that one of his more outrageous stories may just turn out to be true.
Big News from Grand Rock is being distributed in Canada by Markham Street Films, who are also the producers of the film. Since October 2013, the film has played 31 engagements through The Film Circuit and continues to screen in theatres across Canada:
