Film Projects and Participants Selected for First Session of Telefilm Canada Feature Comedy Exchange

CFC is pleased to announce the projects and participants for the first session of the newly launched Telefilm Canada Feature Comedy Exchange, beginning November 26th in Toronto.

The Telefilm Canada Feature Comedy Exchange, a CFC North South Marketplace Initiative in collaboration with Just for Laughs, is a high level creative and business catalyst designed to provide producers and their feature comedy projects with creative counsel, packaging, and financing expertise from key decision makers and comedy experts, while increasing marketplace support. Continuing on the success of the former Telefilm Canada Features Comedy Lab, this new initiative provides greater business opportunities and enhanced promotional activities in support of Canadian talent and creative content.

“One of key objectives is to get Canadian productions in front of larger audiences, more audiences and new audiences,” said Sheila de la Varende, Telefilm's Director of Industry Promotion. “With comedies being one of the most popular forms of entertainment, supporting the Comedy Exchange makes perfect sense. This innovative initiative will continue to play an important role in brokering creative and business relationships between Canadians and top-tier comedy talent.”

The Comedy Exchange pairs experienced Canadian feature-film producer, writer and director teams and their script with internationally renowned comedic minds. The Comedy Exchange will raise the profile of Canadian filmmakers and their film projects internationally, building interest and business relationships within the Hollywood and North American independent film and comedy communities. Seeking to advance the comedy genre within Canadian film, the Exchange generates comedies, which are poised to achieve critical and commercial success.

Projects and teams selected for the 2012 sessions are:

  • DON'T TALK TO IRENE, a coming of age high school comedy about a chubby teen who is forced to spend her school suspension doing community service at a retirement home. Writer/director Pat Mills, Producer Alyson Richards
  • PREGGOLAND, a female-driven comedy about a 35-year-old woman-child who pretends to be pregnant to fit in with her friends. Writer Sonja Bennett, Producers Kevin Eastwood and Blake Corbet
  • TRUE PATRIOT LOVE, a mockumentary set in the crossroads of government bureaucracy and reality show wannabes, follows the lives of 4 finalists competing to win Canada's Next Top Anthem contest after the Feds mistakenly sell “O Canada” to a US rap mogul. Writers/Directors Adam Brodie & Dave Derewlany, Producer Corey Marr

The Comedy Exchange kicks off with a public masterclass - an evening with comedy powerhouse Judd Apatow and acclaimed actress Leslie Mann (This Is 40, Knocked Up). The evening will feature host Richard Crouse in conversation with the husband-and-wife team as they discuss their most recent comic collaboration and their creative process for crafting great and original comedies for film.

Further accomplished mentors and guests will work with the filmmaking teams on an individual basis to offer creative feedback and marketplace counsel and help propel their projects forward.
