Biography:

A screenwriter, story editor, broadcaster & producer originally from New York City, Denis McGrath’s writing has taken him from Vancouver to St. John’s and from L.A. to Cape Town. He’s written drama, comedy, docs, animation, videogames, webisodes & every format in between. He hopes one day to write exclusively for cell phones.

Recent TV credits include the miniseries Flight Of The Storks for Canal + (France), Stargate: Universe (SyFy), Less Than Kind (HBO Canada), and multiple episodes of XIII: The Series (Showcase, Canal +), The Border (CBC), and Blood Ties (Lifetime, SPACE).

In 2006, Denis co-created, wrote & co-executive produced the critically acclaimed miniseries Across The River To Motor City, for which he won a WGC Screenwriting Award for Best Drama, & was nominated for a Gemini Award.

He’s the author of several plays, and in 2003, was nominated for a Toronto Theatre Community Dora Mavor Moore Award for writing the book & lyrics to TOP GUN! THE MUSICAL.

Denis has taught at Ryerson University, contributed to CBC Radio, written op-ed pieces for the TORONTO STAR, lectured at several colleges and Universities, and currently serves on the National Council of the Writers Guild of Canada.

As a producer, McGrath helped start up Canada’s Sci-Fi Channel, “SPACE,” and spent four years chronicling the rise of the digital sphere on Citytv’s groundbreaking, Gemini Award winning series, Media Television. He’s moderated and spoken at discussion panels at North By Northeast, the Banff Television Festival, the Toronto Screenwriting Conference, and is the current host of the WGC- sponsored live interview podcast, “Writers Talking TV.” (Podcasts available on iTunes.)

For five years, from 2005-2010, Denis’ daily blog about Canadian television, “Dead Things ON Sticks” chronicled the ins and outs and ups and downs of the creative side of the Canadian Television Industry. John Doyle, TV critic for the Globe & Mail once wrote: “McGrath’s site is thoughtful, learned & provocative about creating Canadian TV.” McGrath currently splits his time between Toronto & Los Angeles.
