PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Cineplex Entertainment Film Program champions original voices, entrepreneurism and collaboration. We encourage filmmakers to take creative risks and help them develop and package original content for the global entertainment market.

PROGRAM DESIGN

This is a full-time, five-and-a-half month professional program for producers, writers, directors and editors that balances artistic vision with the demands of a shifting industry.

Tuition

Tuition is $5,500 for all labs. There is a $100 application fee to apply.

If accepted into the program, you will be eligible for a scholarship up to the full tuition amount, based on financial need. We will also provide you with support and resources for other scholarship opportunities from across Canada.

PROGRAM PARTNERS

Writers' Lab

Writing is a rigorous, near-constant process of revising, reimagining and rewriting. The Cineplex Entertainment Film Program Writers' Lab will elevate your cinematic storytelling skills through vigorous development, writing, story editing and workshopping a range of different concepts and properties. 


ELIGIBILITY

This program is designed for writers who are deeply committed to expanding their craft and who are ready to engage in a demanding development and filmmaking experience. We are looking for writers with unique, inspired voices and a strong understanding of cinematic storytelling.

To apply, you must have at least a first draft of your feature screenplay that showcases your voice and approach, as well as several other feature project ideas to develop, a proven commitment to the craft and some exposure to the film and television industry.


LAB DESIGN

Project Development

Through a series of highly productive workshops, writing assignments, story editing sessions and actor table reads, you will develop your feature script ideas and film projects. Writers are challenged to define and articulate the distinctive elements of scripts and the components that make a property viable and attractive in the international market.

The goal for each writer is to leave the program with an expanded project slate, including at least one solid, produceable feature script that champions your original voice.

Craft and Collaboration

Writers are immersed in a myriad of perspectives and approaches to story editing through a series of workshops, writing exercises, case studies and productions. Sessions are customized each year to meet the needs of the writers, both as a group and individually, as required.

Writers leave the program with a more comprehensive understanding of storytelling, screenwriting techniques and how to effectively engage with feedback on different levels.

Business and Marketplace

Writers are exposed to a variety of perspectives on the current landscape of filmmaking and writing. You will meet with producers, distributors, funders and other key players in the industry to gain a better understanding of various business considerations and expand your awareness of how these factors impact project slates and long-term career strategy.

Writers engage in a number of sessions focused on the business of writing and develop business plans that help define your long-term career goals. You will be challenged and coached on how to best represent yourself and your projects within the industry, bridging the gap between creative aspirations and the business of screenwriting.

Directors' Lab

The responsibilities of a director are constant and all-encompassing. The Cineplex Entertainment Film Program Directors' Lab challenges you to maintain your creative vision, both on and off the floor, as you develop and workshop a number of projects. 


ELIGIBILITY

This program is designed for directors who are deeply committed to expanding their creative toolbox and broadening their scope as cinematic storytellers. We are looking for directors with a distinct POV and a strong desire to collaborate. You should be actively working toward your first, second or third feature film.

To apply, you must have a reel showcasing your directing talent and voice, experience in the film and television industry, a proven commitment to the craft of directing and a feature film project at some stage of development.


LAB DESIGN

Project Development

For maximum impact, the development of each director’s feature film is on an individual basis. Projects will be developed through a series of rigorous and highly productive workshops, writing assignments and story editing sessions. You will be challenged to articulate what makes your feature distinctive and the factors that make it attractive in the international marketplace.

The goal for each director is to complete the lab with a feature project that champions your original voice, is in an advanced stage of development and that is viable in the evolving media landscape.

Craft and Collaboration

The program offers a chance to explore and push your creative boundaries through a series of complex production exercises, workshops and case studies. These are designed to inform and help shape your creative and collaborative choices. Sessions are customized each year to meet the needs of the directors, both as a group and individually, as required.

Business and Marketplace

Directors are exposed to a variety of perspectives on the current landscape of filmmaking and directing. This includes meeting with producers, distributors, funders and other key players in the industry to gain a better understanding of production and business considerations and how these factors impact project slates and long-term career strategy.

You will also be coached and guided on the best way to successfully represent yourself and your projects within the industry, bridging the gap between your creative aspirations and the business of filmmaking.

Producers' Lab

Producers need to see the big picture. This program constantly exercises your creative and business acumen while you develop and workshop a number of projects and business strategies. 


ELIGIBILITY

Designed for producers with a strong creative vision, commitment to team leadership and entrepreneurial instincts, the Cineplex Entertainment Film Program Producers' Lab is for individuals intent on establishing viable business opportunities in the screen industry.

To apply, you must have producing or production experience, an understanding of the current film and TV marketplace and a project slate which includes a feature-length project at some stage of development.


LAB DESIGN

Project Development

With an individualized focus, you will refine your ability to manage the development process and exercise creative feedback through workshops, writing assignments, story editing sessions and providing notes. Producers will be challenged to identify and articulate the distinctive elements of specific projects while showcasing viability, marketability and saleability within the competitive international marketplace.

Whether your development slate includes dramatic features, documentaries, TV or web series, with the counsel and expertise of international industry experts, you will professionally package key projects. The goal is for you to complete the program with your project at a more advanced stage of development, and the requisite skills to support and package's existing and future properties.

Craft and Collaboration

You will learn how to best support the creative vision of your project while balancing competing practical considerations. Through a series of workshops, simulations, hands-on production exercises and case studies, producers are exposed to a variety of perspectives on the current business landscape.

Each year sessions are customized to meet the needs of the producers, both as a group and individually, as required. You will put into practice your ability to produce and deliver content to the market and leave the program with a more comprehensive understanding of industry expectations and the entire script-to-screen process.

Business and Marketplace

Producers meet regularly with industry leaders working in production, distribution, financing and sales to gain valuable insights on key business considerations. Top experts share knowledge and counsel on best practices, evolving business models and changes in the entertainment and media industries. You will also define your long-term goals and create a strategic business plan to position yourself, and your creative properties, within the global market.

Editors' Lab

Editing is an integral part of the storytelling process. Through intensive editing projects and workshops, the Cineplex Entertainment Film Program Editors' Lab affords you the opportunity to cut a significant volume and variety of content improving your technical craft and elevating your sense of story.


ELIGIBILITY

This program is designed for editors with strong creative instincts, a deep commitment to expanding their craft and a desire to engage in a satisfying, collaborative filmmaking experience. We are looking for editors with a strong understanding of cinematic storytelling and solid technical editing skills.

To apply, you must have experience in the film and television industry, a portfolio showcasing your editing talent, at least two years experience in post-production and a proven commitment to editing.


LAB DESIGN

Craft and Collaboration

Editing exercises, case studies and production workshops are designed to increase your technical, collaborative and creative storytelling skills. Editors are immersed in a myriad of perspectives and approaches to editing to enhance their role in the storytelling process.

Working alongside the other Cineplex Entertainment Film Program labs, you will gain experience working with different material and creative partners, while sharpening your editing and collaborative skills. Exercises are customized each year to meet the needs of the editors, individually and as a group, as required.


Business and Marketplace

To help define long-term career goals, professional strategy and ensure you are equipped to manage changes in the post-production arena, you will engage in a number of sessions focused on the business of editing.


Key Project: Cutting the Feature

This component puts into practice the dramatic, organizational and professional skills required for an editor to successfully tackle cutting a feature. Over the course of the program, you will be tasked with editing a produced feature film while receiving high-level feedback and mentorship.The goal is for each editor to leave with the skills and confidence necessary to seek out, secure and execute a feature or TV series gig.
