Application Criteria

"…to hear great filmmakers debate the ideas and choices behind my film could be exhausting, intimidating, even paralyzing at times, but it ultimately enriched and strengthened my knowledge of what I was doing and why…"

Do you have a compelling idea for a gripping documentary?  Are you willing to stretch your creative limits in a collaborative environment?

Successful applicants will be experienced Canadian (citizen or landed immigrant) directors with the drive and desire to fully commit to the collaborative, “think tank” nature of this unique documentary development program.  Directors must make themselves available for each of the four to six, 2-3 day, residency modules that will take place over the course of this yearlong program.

During periods of supported inquiry, when the participant is not attending modules, he/she is expected to continue to work on the creative development of their project.  This includes finessing their own ideas, continuing to write, to collaborate with their dedicated creative mentors and other directors in the program. They will also prepare their projects for presentation to peers and to the marketplace of distributors and funders beyond.

Applicants must have previous documentary credits and demonstrate directorial confidence and originality.

Each applicant to the CFC NFB Documentary Program must submit a 5-page, well-defined project proposal.

"The benefits of the CFC-NFB program will be felt for the rest of my career…"
